Industrial FedEx Regional Distribution Center

FedEx Ground, a leading small-package ground carrier and an operating company of FedEx Corporation, responded to the ever-growing business demands of the Carolinas with a new state-of-the-art warehouse and distribution center. The new distribution center serves as Fed Ex Ground’s regional hub for the northeastern region of South Carolina and the southeastern region of North Carolina.

Britt, Peters and Associates provided structural engineering design services for the project, which represents a total owner investment of $12 million. In response to the client’s need for speed-to-market, Britt Peters condensed its typical design time by 50 percent – while recommending a durable and economical foundation solution to meet the client’s specific budget requirements. Special challenges included coordinating the maze of floor drains between foundation supports.

Strategically located just off I-95 in the growing Pee Dee region of South Carolina, the 75,580-square-foot facility replaces an outdated FedEx Ground facility located nearby. The company’s new Florence distribution center is equipped with the most advanced sorting and shipping technology available. At the time of its opening, the new FedEx Ground distribution center featured 41 dock doors; however, the building’s design incorporates a removable curb to accommodate future expansion up to two times the original footprint.

Situated on 16.5 acres, the Florence facility is one of several centralized distribution centers in the FedEx Ground national network, which ships more than 3 million packages daily. Britt Peters also performed structural design for a FedEx distribution center in Durham, North Carolina.
