Carolina First Corporate Campus
Greenville, SC
Currently located in downtown Greenville, Carolina First will soon be moving to its new corporate headquarters, located in the fast developing I-85 corridor. Begun in April 2007, the first phase of this 65-acre development is due to be completed in 2008. The first buildings are now under construction, with seven more planned to complete the ten building complex.
The goal for the project is to achieve LEED Gold certification for the campus landscaping and buildings. This will be attained by using local building materials, capturing rain water for re-use, and by using local flora wherever possible instead of high maintenance lawns. The project area is considered to be a brownfield development because the site was formerly an under-used industrial and commercial facility where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by potential environmental contaminations.
Britt, Peters & Associates provided structural design services for the two office buildings being constructed. Special structural design considerations included an outdoor roof terrace, coordination and design of supports for precast concrete veneer, and a tunnel design for access between one of the office buildings and the conference center. One of the office buildings also included an outdoor elevated concrete walkway located over the loading dock area. The project also offered several coordination challenges due to a separate design and construction team running its operation on site for the conference center located between the two office buildings.
In addition to the office buildings, Britt, Peters, & Associates also provided structural design services for the campus hardscape. The construction of a manmade reflection pond, as well as retaining walls reaching twenty-five feet, posed design and coordination challenges due to their proximity to the office buildings, conference center, and tunnel.
